DEFENSE SHARES

This is the full data set for an article that explains defense shares in great depth.  In a nutshell, each team is given a number of shares based on their batting average on balls in play (BABIP) and runs per game allowed after adjusting for Defense Independent Pitching Statistics (DIPS).  The minimum score is 100 and the maximum score is 200.  Each player on the team is then given a share of those points based on the number of unassisted putouts and assists they receive.  If there is more than one assist on a play, the out is divided between all the assisters (.5 for 2 assists, .33 for 3 assists, etc.).  The final defensive share is the percentage of defense points a player has earned on each team.  In these data, players receive separate shares for playing different positions or for different teams, and they have not been combined.  A key appears at the bottom of the page
