Judging philosophy:
From Vik: John debated on and off for 3 years at CUNY, helping start the John Jay campus program. Last year he was in elims as a JV debater. This is John's first year as a judge, although he has led a number of practice debates. He was novice only for the first tournament of the year as he did not judge in tournaments when he was a debater, but has judged at most tournaments in the region this year, so he's heard a lot of topic arguments and has been judging all levels of debate. John is willing to do work at the end of rounds - read cards, sort out the warrants, etc. He is probably the most willing of our coaches to do this because he is possibly the most patient, even-tempered person I have ever met in debate. From John: I am a big fan of kritiks. The crazier the better, but if you cannot explain it to me properly nor give me a clear link scenario then I have no choice but to vote you down. While debating, I was able to run anything so I don't mind a few politics scenarios. I also used to run framework and theory, yet I lose interest if the debate draws down to a framework or theory debate. But if the other team does not properly answer the argument I have no problem dropping that team. Not being a fantastic flower, clear speeches and explanations are key to get me to vote you up on the ballot. I am now a little more opinionated so I don't mind hearing any type of arguments as long it is articulated properly to me by the end of the debate round.
